About Sanuki Menki

From Agricultural Machinery to Noodle-making Machines

"Here, try this udon," then-president (the second generation) said, handing me a strand. I bit in — and heard a grating crunch. We were prototyping noodle machines in a corner of an ironworks, and iron shavings had made their way in. Honestly, I remember the texture of the iron more than the noodle, but the proud smile on the face of our then-president (the second generation) is etched clearly in my memory. It was the moment the "foot-press substitute machine" — developed on commission from Kagawa Prefecture — was born.

In the autumn of 1965, an unexpected request from the Kagawa Prefecture Tourism Division set the development of the foot-press substitute machine in motion. Through a personal connection — the head of the Takamatsu Health Center happened to be from Takase (where our headquarters is located) — our company, then an agricultural machinery manufacturer, was chosen for the task. Our main product at the time, a corrugated agricultural roller, was in decline, and we converted it into the foot-press substitute machine. This became the turning point that launched us as a noodle-making machine manufacturer.

Why was a foot-press substitute machine needed? Because numerous complaints about the unsanitary nature of foot-kneading led authorities to issue a "foot-kneading prohibition ordinance," affecting all 500 noodle factories in the prefecture at the time. The development of this machine not only served the goal of food hygiene, but also helped reduce the labor required in noodle production — ultimately bringing high-quality, large-scale noodle manufacturing to Japan's noodle industry.
